Joint pain can be debilitating for all ages
Joint and soft tissue injections can help reduce knee pain, shoulder pain and hip pain, and particularly pain due to osteoarthritis and tendonitis. We can use either a corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid (ostenil) injection or platelet rich fibrin injections (PRF). We are also able to use a combination of the above to produce and even more potent effect.
These are a powerful tool in orthopaedics for treating inflammation and help quickly alleviate the pain associated with a number of orthopaedic conditions associated with inflammation including arthritis, certain injuries and tendonitis. By limiting the inflammation, pain from these conditions is often relieved for many months allowing more effective rehabilitation.
PLATELET RICH PLASMA/FIBRIN
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is an innovative treatment option for muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries, as well as arthritis. With an abundance of platelets and fibrin, this treatment is a concentrated source of healing proteins and growth factors, making it an effective way to speed up healing and alleviate painful symptoms.
But it’s not just platelets and fibrin that make this treatment so powerful. It also contains stem cells, the building blocks of regeneration. So, by using your own blood plasma, we can create an injectable platelet-rich fibrin that kickstarts the healing process, promoting a gradual, cumulative, and long-lasting effect on your injury or condition.
If you’re experiencing pain and discomfort and looking for a treatment option, PRF therapy is certainly worth considering!
PRF, is the next generation of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. It is highly concentrated with growth factors, making it far more effective than standard PRP.
One of the major advantages of PRF over PRP is the fibrin matrix it forms. This matrix allows for the slow release of active growth factors for up to 2 weeks, compared to the 24-48 hours of conventional PRP.
The process of creating PRF is simple, a small sample of blood is collected from the patient’s arm, and then slowly spun in a centrifuge to isolate the white blood cells and platelets. This creates a highly concentrated PRF serum. The doctor then injects the PRF serum into the area of treatment.
PRF therapy is an advanced and highly effective treatment option for tendinopathies, injuries, and arthritis. It significantly speeds up the healing process and reduces pain associated with these conditions.
OSTENIL PLUS (HYALURONIC ACID)
Joints affected by osteoarthritis typically have lower concentrations of hyaluronic acid in the synovial fluid, the thick liquid that helps cushion and lubricate the joint. As a result, the synovial fluid in osteoarthritic joints has lower viscosity and elasticity than healthy synovial fluid, decreasing its ability to lubricate the joint and absorb shocks. This leads gradually to wearing of the joint/cartilage and increased pain, stiffness and swelling. Ostinel®Plus is a pain relieving injection for the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
A solution of Ostenil ®Plus is injected into the space in the joint that contains the synovial fluid and works by restoring the natural balance between the breakdown and production of hyaluronic acid. This effect means that it can decrease pain and stiffness and improve the other symptoms of osteoarthritis. Joints suitable for ostenil injections include the knee and shoulder.
The Cochrane Review is internationally recognised as the higheste standard in evidence based health care, investigating the effect of therapeutic interventions and treatments. Their review supported the use of hyaluronic aic (HA) in the treatment of mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis (Review here).
You may not notice any benefit immediately after your injection, but will gradually experience a reduction in pain and stiffness. The improvement in your symptoms is likely to persist for several months, depending on the progression of the degenerative change in the joint being treated. When the effects of your Ostenil® Plus injection wear off, you can safely choose to have another injection if your clinician agrees it is appropriate.
